New to WordPress

Hello all,
I am new to WordPress. I am wondering if I can do the following:

Create a homepage with an image on it. I would like to be able to click on different sections of the image and perform certain tasks (such as show pages or portfolio items).
Essentially to use the image as a menu system.

The image would be divided into 9 or so sections, each section would go to a different area when clicked. So Imagine an image with 9 sections 3 rows of 3.

Any advice would be most appreciated.
