What plugin did create CUSTOMER role? May be that plugin assigns it as the default one?
This one… i have also tried to create a NEWcustomer with the same settings as a subscriber, but it still defaults to customer, i have also tried to set the Customer with the same settings a subsriber and that still does now work

Thanks i kind of fixed it by changing the default to customer and adding a new role approved customer and changing the tick boxes in the dynamic prices…
but now we do not get email notification when the new customer subscribes

I changed default role to ‘Subscriber’ and registered new user via
/wp-login.php?action=register
1) User was registered with role ‘Subscriber’
2) I got new user registration email notification to the temporally changed WP admin email
Please test again.
A similar problem: I wanted to set the default role to author. This works if I create a new user by myself as administrator but if the user himself tries to register he get the standard role subscriber. So the registered user can not publish until I set him to author.
