I’m sorry for the inconvenience. I believe I was able to fix the issue on version 2.7.7 I just released.

Now it authenticates for users who got the email with the link, but users who missed the email get only a
“ERROR: An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again.”
when trying to log in, instead of a notification that they need to verify their email.

I couldn’t reproduce that error. So, if a unverified user tries to login, he does not receive the proper message from the plugin?
Anyway, please try changing the option “Advanced > Authenticate filter” to see if you have better results.
