There are plugins that you might be mix and match to achieve what you are after though, eg:

I don’t think that it will make this plugin too complex…
Its a standard behavior that all external site need to open in a new window and good to have this option.
I tried a different plugins with ability to open external links in a new window, but it doesn’t not work with your plugin, for some reason, mb because it work as a redirect, but now as normal link in the post (for example).
I saw this solution in the plugin Page Links to: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/page-links-to/
But unforchanotly, this plugin doesn’t work with my site configuration, I’m using elementor and URL isn’t saved.
Only your plugin is works for me, so I’m looking for some help and solution.

Sorry the others did not work. By way of explanation all my plugins scratch an itch that I need for my own projects and I open source the code as a way of helping the community.
