Correct. Even before v4, the widget threw PHP errors unless you also reverted to using the classic editor instead of the block editor for widgets. My workaround (for now at least) is to use a shortcode block in the widget area. Not quite the set of options which were in the widget, but adequate.
Same problem here. I was using the NextGEN Widget to show a few random pictures from our galleries in the page footer. I was unable to configure the shortcode for this purpose (mainly to limit the number of images or disable pagination), but switching to the NextGEN slideshow widget serves as a workaround.
@melebius Thank you, it works as a workaround for now. Except that there is no limit, of the number of photos, and it shows photos in ascending order.
Using the slideshow widget, the sort order will be the gallery order. But if you use the shortcode block you can specify a random selection of images and a random sort order. Like this, where ‘ids’ are your chosen gallery numbers and any parameter not stated uses the settings default:
[ngg src=”random_images” ids=”3,4″ display=”basic_slideshow” order_by=”rand()” gallery_width=”260″ gallery_height=”195″]
@mbsharp As the sort order is also not working after upgrading to v. 4 and since I am using Justified Image Grid to override older NGG shortcodes, that solution does not work on my site.
We’d really like to see this widget come back. It’s so nice to be able to see what photos have recently been added when your site is a gigantic archive (as mine is). The slideshow option doesn’t fulfill that need.
I did write on this thread and got a warning for jumping in on someone elses thread! I see I’m not the only one!
I have the same problem as melibius, we have the widget in the footer and getting the [not a valid template] message there.
I would like to hear from the developers – are they working on this and is it going to be fixed in an update and if so, when. If not, a detailed work around would be gratefully received.
My site is running on the Genesis framework and has nextGEN gallery and nextGEN Pro installed. I have no access to the pro account as I inherited the site, but both plugins are up to date.
I’m happy to provide the url for investigation if the developers would like to take a look.

Das Next-Gen-Widget funktioniert noch immer nicht!!!!
Auch eine Mehrfach-Beschriftung der Galeriefotos ist noch immer nicht möglich, dh. man muss jedes Foto extra aufrufen, um eine Beschreibung hinzuzufügen.
Wann kann mit einer Lösung dieses Problemes gerechnet werden. Dieser Support ist sehr mangelhaft!!!

I had the same issue and went to Settings/ Reset Options -> Reset all Settings.
That made the trick. Fortunately I did not have that many settings so I had the luxury to be able to use this option without making the site look like crap.

Mir fehlt noch die Möglichkeit, so wie früher bei den Bildunterschriften nicht jedes Bild extra aufzurugen.
In der Vorgängerversion wurden da jeweils 25 Möglichkeiten auf einmal geboten. Da hat man dann die Texte einfach weiterkopieren können. Jetzt muss ich mühevoll jedes Bild einzeln aufrufen und danach wieder abspeichern.
Vielleicht kommt das auch noch irgendwann zurück.
