Anyone can write a shim to turn those extra fields into meta boxes.
Unfortunately, WordPress doesn’t have the proper action hooks in place to even begin to take a wild guess at what plugins want to attach what fields in what place. This means a human needs to write some code to make that decision, and with only a few short lines of code, things are talking to each other.
