The benefits are realized right away but the delay in Google analytics is roughly 24-48 hours.
With that being said, try this: http://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/
Does it say “enable compression” after you run your test? If so, on what elements? If they are third party images from a CDN or a JavaScript hosted externally you can’t control them, but you should have realized an immediate benefit.

CustomWPNinjas solved my speed issue and then some! I moved my site to their hosting from Yahoo and, with a free health check on their part, the site is now wicked fast!

Turns out, he was on Yahoo and it does not allow any edits to .htaccess (among many other incredibly odd things that Yahoo hosting does)
