• I simply downloaded the version which is default on the wordpress website (2.6.1). I hope it’s supported. I am mystified at how there is no file paths in the wp-config.php file telling the browser where to find the database… but there is not. I have uploaded all files, and configured whatever there is in the config file to configure. When I get http://www.kobidomassage.com/wp-admin/install.php in my browser here’s what happens:

    1. It says I must upgrade my database, because the database I have is out of date. (I have not installed the database yet, so how could it tell if it’s out of date?)

    2. It tells me to enter the blog name and my email address, which I do, then I click install. The browser goes to this page:
    http://www.kobidomassage.com/wp-admin/install.php?step=2

and on that page it simple renders the wordpress logo twice, and that’s it. No content. No step two. Nothing.

What to do now guys, how to get the famous five minute install going?

    thank you,
    JSC, Boulder

  • When you say you haven’t installed the database yet, do you mean you didn’t create a database and enter the information for that database in the config file? Because that would be rather vital to installing WP.

    Hi Edie,
yes that is vital. I created the database. It’s on my own server, so permissions are there. In every other database installation I’ve ever done, there are file paths telling where the files are sitting. So that seems odd there are no file paths called for in the config file for WP. However, I’m not an expert, so maybe this one works differently. In answer to your question, the database is created, and the install.php file does not seem to upload any information to it. It goes to step two and gives a blank page, and there is no data uploaded to the database. So it must not be finding it. But again, the only instruction for configuration was to the config.php file, which I did as accurately as I could, I don’t see where to go next. I did not, however configure the language line: define (‘WPLANG’, ”); – as I am hoping English is the default and requires no definition.

So, where to next to tell the script where my database is? Or, any suggestions?
    thanks for your help.

PS: This message is at the top of the install.php page:
    Database Upgrade Required
Your WordPress database is out-of-date, and must be upgraded before you can continue.
The upgrade process may take a while, so please be patient.

Unfortunately clicking on that upgrade button again takes me to a blank page, with no change to the database. I do see that my server is running MySQL version 3.23.58 – not version 4 which is what WP requires, so maybe that is the problem. I will look into what’s required to upgrade my MySQL on my server.
    thanks, JSC

PPS: I see that WP wants MySQL version 4 – or greater – so presumably if I upgrade my whole server to version MySQL version 5 that would NOT be a problem….

Anyone able to verify that? Will WP run on version 5 OK?

    thanks,
    JSC

Could be the SQL version or you aren’t entering the correct info for the database. Who’s your host?

Anyone able to verify that? Will WP run on version 5 OK?

Just fine — millions of wordpress blogs are already running on it. Note the the requirements specify a minimum.

PPPS: I’m running a LINUX server 2.6.10-1.771_FC2. Anything special I should know about making it work on Linux?
    thanks again,
    JSC

    NO.

you are really overthinking this. You look at the requirements — you make sure they are met — its merely a mnatter of making sure that you are using relatively current versions of very popular software.

Any decent host already does this — and anyone trying to do this on a home brewed server, should have already mastered this or they shouldnt be administering their own server.
