I’m experiencing this same issue and have previously reported it. All I’m getting so far is technobabble from the developers.
Answer from my thread:
If you need to access the deprecated Imagely settings, follow these steps:
- Log into your WordPress dashboard.
- Add this query string to your website URL and press enter:
/wp-admin/admin.php?page=imagely-settings&tab=hidden
- Your URL should look like this:
https://www.mywebsite.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=imagely-settings&tab=hidden
This will bring up the legacy admin options “NextGEN Gallery > Gallery Settings” from where you should be able to select a global custom template for the gallery display type.
Please note that these are deprecated Legacy settings, so support may be limited if issues arise.

U can try this but it didn’t work for me. I’m still waiting for a solution with a custom templates ((
Hey @sneader ,
We found that the [Not a valid template] issue occurs either when using a custom template for you gallery layout or if you had a Legacy (Old) Template selected on a gallery.
Our team is aware of the issue and is actively working on a fix that will be included in an upcoming update.
In the meantime, if you were not using a custom template for a gallery, then you could you please be sure none of your galleries are using a Legacy Template?
To do this go to a page with a gallery using the NextGEN Gallery Legacy block > Edit gallery > Customize Display Settings > make sure the Legacy Template is set to Default: https://a.supportally.com/i/P2Hh1c
I’ve marked this thread to reach out as soon as the update including the official fix for this has been released!
Thanks!
Hey @sneader @vitocech
We just released an update that resolves the [Not a valid template] error.
Please be sure to update your NextGEN Gallery plugin to version 4.0.3 to start seeing this addition.
I hope this helps!
Thanks! 🙂
I am still struggling with this [Not a valid template] error.
I have version 4.0.4 installed installed on two sites, one site does NOT give this error the other does..
On the site that gives the error I have done a full reset and also delete the plugin and reinstalled it, but I still get the same error.
Same problem. Sneader’s fix worked. Thanks @sneader !
@williamdersh I had updated to the latest version which broke my galleries too. I rolled back to the last version prior to 4.0 per @sneader which fixed the problem. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
