Same problem with sidebar widget as many other reports. Widget is to display a few random images from a list of galleries. Affects three sites set up identically. No problem with main galleries.

I guess the answer lies somewhere in the half megabyte or so of error log which I have had to clear.

    Hey @mbsharp ,

We found that the [Not a valid template] issue occurs either when using a custom template for you gallery layout or if you had a Legacy (Old) Template selected on a gallery.

Our team is aware of the issue and is actively working on a fix that will be included in an upcoming update.

In the meantime, if you were not using a custom template for a gallery, then you could you please be sure none of your galleries are using a Legacy Template?

To do this go to a page with a gallery using the NextGEN Gallery Legacy block > Edit gallery > Customize Display Settings > make sure the Legacy Template is set to Defaulthttps://a.supportally.com/i/P2Hh1c

I’ve marked this thread to reach out as soon as the update including the official fix for this has been released!

    Thanks!

Thank you, but that doesn’t seem to work. All my galleries have avoided legacy template settings for some time. The ‘Select View’ value I use for Basic Thumbnails is ‘caption-view’.

My on-page galleries work file in Basic Thumbnails and in Slideshow which allows picking of individual images to display in caption-view.

My issue is with the sidebar which uses the Nextgen legacy widget, picking a random image from a gallery. I tried changing that particular gallery from caption-view to default-view and the widget still shows [Not A Valid Template]. There is no way to change the view within the widget.

With the widget anyway, I have to revert to the legacy editor rather than the block editor to avoid some PHP errors from the Nextgen code. Looking at the alternative of using a block gallery for the sidebar, I don’t see the option of picking a random image: I don’t want to show the whole gallery in the sidebar.

I have managed to do what I require. I have given up on the Nextgen legacy widget and on the need to use Classic Editor for widgets to avoid PHP code errors in the Nextgen widget. It has taken quite a lot of experimentation to get it all right.

I have used a shortcode block for each gallery widget and used the Nextgen information about how to structure a shortcode [ngg … ] to display a slideshow with override of defaults as necessary. From the slideshow in the widget, I can select an image to display as a basic thumbnail for which caption_view does work correctly.

    Hey @mbsharp

We just released an update that resolves the [Not a valid template] error.

Please be sure to update your NextGEN Gallery plugin to version 4.0.3 to start seeing this addition.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks! 🙂

Not in the Nextgen widget it doesn’t.

This issue ([not a valid template] on sidebar) persists on our site even with version 4.0.3.

We are not using a legacy template. Please help!

This is now fixed with version 4.04
