My website is hosted on strato.de, and I am trying to update or install plugins, but the update fails. Here are the things I tried:

    • I disable W3Total cache plugin, thought its because of cache. But the plugin (which I uploaded manually from FTP) is still old version.
    • Check PHP memory limit, also add this to wp_config.php
    • Download the plugin folder, replace the files on server, but in backend, I can still see the old version. I check the .php file of the plugin from FTP, and it has the new version. I don’t know why I can still see the old version.
    • When I try to update normally (by clicking on the update button) it fails, and website stop working. Then I had to remove the .maintanance file from root, to get the website (and backend) work again.
    • Check file permissions, which are good. (Folder: drwxr-xr-x and File: -rw-r–r–)

Is there anything which I can do? Please help!

I contacted the server support, but they said, I have to ask this in WordPress Forum because they don’t know how to solve this.

    Please help!

Unfortunately, Strato.de is known for giving such answers. However, they usually refer to the German-language support forum here: https://de.ww.wp.xz.cn/support/forums/

What exactly happens when you try to install an update? Do you see an error message, and if so, what does it say?

Also check under Tools > Site Health to see if there are any issues listed there.

    Hello @harshvyas,

I hope things are going well for you.

    but the update fails

Can you share more information about what error or message appears?

The plugin installation and update are failing, usually due to permission issues. However, in your case, when you’re trying to change the plugin folder, it isn’t reflecting, but deleting the .maintenance file makes it work.

Could you please confirm if the .maintenance file and wp-content>plugins are in the same root directory? You may be looking at another WordPress installation.

To verify this, please navigate to the WordPress Admin dashboard >> Tools >> Site Health >> Info tab >> Check the file directory path and file permissions. Alternatively, you can copy the site info and share it here or upload it to https://pastebin.com/ so we can review and suggest more ways to narrow down the issue.

We look forward to hearing from you soon on this.

    Kind Regards,

Thank you for your quick reply!

When I try to update a plugin, it gives “critical error” message and the backend also stop working with same error message. I notice that it creates a file “.maintanance” in root directory. I delete the file and website start working again.

Please check the site health screenshot.

Does it matter which plugin you are trying to update? A critical error may indicate a problem with its update. The reason for the error should be visible in the error log. You can find it in your hosting area. If necessary, the support of your hosting can help you.

Alternatively, you could also enable debugging in WordPress. How to do this is described here: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/ – also here the support of your hosting can help you if necessary to edit the file accordingly.

In both cases you should be able to see what the cause is in the logfile.

This issue is not for a particular plugin, but for all plugins. I also can’t install a new plugin. Also this was there when I was trying to upgrade WordPress version.

Then please take a look at the error log as described.

Today I tried to update plugins normally (by clicking on update) and its working. I think there is something wrong with the server, which is now solved.

Thank you very much for your help! I really appreciate!
