You could try to use our Taxonomy column and see if the ‘Course Categories’ taxonomy is available on the list. If Course Categorie is a taxonomy that is related to a course, I expect that it will work.

That’s not a perfect fix, though, since the reason I wanted this column was to enable me to sort by course category…and while I still can, it means I have to find a course with that category first, instead of just finding it in the dropdown…because that dropdown doesn’t work right now. I have to find the category in the taxonomy column and if the category I am looking for is not on the first page (or even subsequent…) I will have to search for a course I know is in that category and THEN click on that category in the taxonomy column to sort out all the other courses and only see the courses in that category.
It works, but it’s extra work. So I guess, it will do for now, but is there any chance that this might eventually work properly in the future, or am I just doomed to have to use a workaround?
I’m not really sure what you’re trying to accomplish.
Please notice that the free version does not support sorting, so I’m not sure what you say you can do it. I kind of suspect that you’re trying to filter instead of sorting. Because when clicking on a term in the list will bring you to a filtered overview. Filtering is also not part of the free version but it is supported in the pro.
