Not Backing Up Automatically
-
I’ve been using the free plug-in for the last year. It has never backed up automatically. I have the automatic backups set to Weekly and to save 5 backups. I have to manually press Backup Now to get it to backup. It’s been this way since I downloaded the plugin last year. I have it linked to a Google Drive. It works when I do it manually. But it has never done an automatic backup.

Hi there,
This sounds like an issue with your WordPress cron scheduling, we should check this.
In Advanced Tools >> Site Info you’ll find the option to install WP Crontrol, please do.
Once it’s installed go to the WordPress Menu >> Tools >> Cron Events and click this.
In the Cron Events tab go to Search Hook Names field and enter ‘updraft’, no quotes.
Click Search Hook Names and this should bring you up a list of updraft related hooks.
Do you see items scheduled for backing up the files and database? Are there warnings?
You should be seeing the two entries, updraft_backup_database and updraft_backup.
If you can let me know what you find it will help me to understand the problem better.
Best regards,
NickThank you I am seeing a couple of errors: I was able to manually backup but noticed it hasn’t auto updated since November.
There was a problem spawning a call to the WP-Cron system on your site. This means WP-Cron events on your site may not work. The problem was:
cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 3002 milliseconds with 0 bytes received
This is the only file that shows with search for Upddraft:

4 hours 42 minutesUpdraftPlus_Filesystem_Functions::clean_temporary_files()Twice DailyHi there,
Thank you for the additional information.
Some hosting actually disables WP Cron, it would be worth checking this error with them.
The lack of Cron event entries for the scheduled backup is a clear reason for the problem.
I would suggest checking your Settings, make a small change, and then click Save Changes.
You can then roll back the change if you like, it’s really just about confirming saved settings.
It’s always important to click Save Changes to make sure the settings are correctly adopted.
It may sound very obvious but it’s a fairly common mistake, and not always the user’s fault.
Once this is done you should see new entries in the Cron events for the scheduled backup.
If the entries do not appear we’ll have to consider other causes, this should not be the case,

NickThanks @nrobertsudp This other person looks to have commented on my thread.
I did as you said, and I only see 1 thing in the Cron Events when searching for ‘updraft’ no quotes.
updraftplus_clean_temporary_files
UpdraftPlus_Filesystem_Functions::clean_temporary_files()Twice DailyThere’s nothing else there. I don’t see errors here. I am using BigScoots.
Hi there,
I thought there was something a little different… though the solution may be the same.
In your case it looks like the settings haven’t been saved as there should be more items.
Which means the last part of my previous answer is the path I would suggest following:I would suggest checking your Settings, make a small change, and then click Save Changes.

Could you please give this approach a try and let me know if you see the new Cron entries?
Apologies if I’ve misunderstood and you’ve already done this. Please let me know if it’s so.
Best regards,Nick
Ok changing it from Weekly to Fortnightly then saving seems to have worked. I now have the 2 additional events in Cron Events. I also have the green text in the settings saying when the backup will run. I never had this before. I did pick the settings of Weekly and 5 backups when I first installed the plugin, but for some reason, it didn’t trigger the same way doing a Save of new settings just triggered now. I’ll swap it back to Weekly now.
Can I delete that Cron plugin or is it needed for anything? Thanks.
Hi there,
Thank you for letting me know, it’s very helpful for others viewing the thread too.
It looks like the problem was down to schedule settings no being saved correctly.
There’s no problem deleting WP Crontrol, we mostly use it as a debugging tool.
If you do want to reinstall you can find it in Advanced Tools >> Site information.
Best regards,
NickThanks, Nick.
Hi there,
Thanks very much, I’m happy to have helped.
Have a great week!
Best regards,
Nick
