• Hello,

I was hoping to switch to Meow Gallery but it appears that it is not working with Jetpack’s “Carousel” lightbox (by far my favorite lightbox since it shows title, caption AND descripion; see https://jetpack.com/support/carousel/).

When I activate Meow gallery, a post or page with a gallery on my site contains a note “Jetpack’s Carousel has been disabled because another plugin or your theme took over the [gallery] shortcode”. This is with the Classic Editor.

Using Gutenberg (which I try to avoid) there is no note at all, but Jetpack’s Carousel doesn’t work either.

    Thanks for looking into it.
    Alex.

(sorry but I do not have a staging site or online test environment to link to; on my live sites, I have deactivated Meow gallery obviously since it’s not working as expected)

    Hi @antermoia,

Of course, the Meow Gallery takes over the [gallery] shortcode, that’s what it is supposed to do 🙂 It overrides/enhances the native gallery.

How are you using the Meow Gallery, when you are using it? By using the shortcode as well? If you do, in that case, I could propose a solution.

    Hello Jordy,

I don’t use Gutenberg, if that’s what you mean. I’m using the [gallery] shortcode with the Classic Editor.

    Thank you
    Alex.

    Hi @antermoia,

I have tried JetPack, and indeed, it’s not really possible or it would be a lot of work to try to make it work and I am not sure it worth it. In fact, I was a bit taken aback by the whole JetPack experience as well, in particular the fact that it forces you to connect your website to WordPress.com.

I have tried the Carousel on a standard WP gallery, but it doesn’t look so great. You have tried the Meow Lightbox, right? I know the Lightbox only display either the Caption or Description, but you could share with us a screenshot of what you are trying to make? Or maybe a screenshot of what the Carousel does for you?

In a gallery, I’m using it like this:
    https://www.alex-kunz.com/variations-of-a-sunken-tidepool-at-dawn/

(these ARE “thumbnails”, sort of – I’m just using the large files because no one will bother to fiddle around with a lightbox on mobile…)

On a larger screen, you can left click a photo, and it opens the Carousel “lightbox”. However, you can also right click on the thumbnail and select “Open Link in a new Tab” and then you’ll get the attachment page, which I find REALLY useful to link to individual images and keep them in the context of my site.

I sometimes add extra information to the description, like so:
    https://www.alex-kunz.com/photos/summer-dawn-at-garnet-peak/#main

This is the reason why I want title, caption AND description. WordPress has these fields (the caption is internally just the_excerpt I think) so I’d like to use them.

PS: you can put Jetpack into a staging mode or a development mode

https://jetpack.com/support/development-mode/ (features that don’t require a connection to wordpress.com will still work then)
