I have a site hosted by WPEngine, it shows “not supported”. Is it supported in the future?

That’s surprising, as:
* there is nothing in AO that does not work on WP Engine
* I know of several sites on WP Engine that use AO
* WP Engine promotes AO in multiple blogposts.

So maybe ask WP Engine support what is going on there?
