only limited storage location for backup possible

For my websites I currently store backups in a directory /home/www/backup….. outsite of my original website directory.

With V 5.1 I can still specify this location on my server and ‘save and test connection’ without any warning or error message. But if I check my location again, my previous name is immediately replaced by a default name uploads/backwpup/2f16c2/backups/.

If I simply define home/www/backwpup…. as my local backup storage, I will find this in my local website directory under my-website/home/www/backwpup…. Backups will be stored in this location, but these backups will not be listed in the Backups History of BackWPup.

Is it no longer possible to define local backup locations outsite of my website directory?
And what about listing the backups in the Backup History?

Hi,

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

To clarify — even in previous versions, it was not possible to store backups outside the WordPress installation directory using the UI. This behavior has not changed in version 5.1. If it seemed possible earlier, it might have been a misunderstanding of the path resolution or behavior specific to your hosting setup.

Regarding Backup History visibility — you’re right. Backups stored in a custom directory outside the default storage structure are not listed in the plugin’s Backup History view. I’ve already passed this feedback to our team so we can explore how to better support visibility of external paths in future updates.

Hi,

thanks for the quick response.

With regards to the storage location on the local server of my service provider:

My storage structure for several websites is as follows:
/home/www/website1
/home/www/website2
/home/www/website3
/home/www/backup-website1
/home/www/backup-website2
/home/www/backup-website3

In the user interface of backWPup 4.1.7 I defined the storage location as ‘/home/www/backup-website1/daily/’ and ‘/home/www/backup-website1/weekly/’ etc. In this way I can easily monitor the space consumption of each site independant of backups. This is important for me as websites are fotoclub websites with thousands of compressed images which are frequently stored together with there uncompressed images for printing. Uncompressed image files account for more than 12 GB of space whereas backups of the website (without these uncompressed images) only use about 4 GB space.

Therefore in my understanding backWPup 4.1.7 officially supports backup storage locations outsite of the website installation directory. That’s why I am still on 4.1.7.
