That’s a pretty good deal. What kind of space and bandwidth do you get?
2 GB band width and 200mb webspace, on Linux servers.
so far, I am using only 50mb and I rarely hit 1GB of bandwidth
NM, that’s a pretty lousy deal. I’m getting 7GB of space, 192GB bandwidth, and unlimited MySQL databases for $19.95/mo from http://www.dreamhost.com
And, you can get 2GB of space, 75GB bandwidth, and 10 MySQL databases for $6.95/mo from http://www.bluehost.com
daniel, is that 2GB/month of traffic? you might want to check out http://o3hosting.com , they have fairly stable $1/month or $12/year plans for 2GB/month + 100 MB space with a laissez-faire admin policy (a lot of room for experimenting with codes etc)
Update: WordPress has posted their recommended hosts: http://ww.wp.xz.cn/hosting/
I have to say I totally disagree with Dreamhost being in there as a recommended host. Whilst other’s on here wave the Dreamhost banner I found them to be an absolute nightmare.
I recently wrote a post of my experiences with them.
http://shadows.os42.com/index.php/2005/04/11/webhosting/
And before anyone claims I am out to slather them, that is not the case, but I always think people should be honest. In my experience they just did not produce the goods.
Some of us have had great experiences (such as myself), while some of us have had horrible experiences (such as Shadow). Honestly, I think this is the case with every single web host out there.
Now, Matt had expressed interest in establishing a personal relationship with the supported hosting providers. So, I can only assume that Matt has established a good personal relationship with DreamHost. Not to mention that DreamHost is very dedicated to WordPress and they do have a few WP “gurus” on their support staff now. Matt also has a DH affiliate link, which means that he is now a DreamHost customer. I’m sure he’ll pull them if he has a bad time.
In the end, we need to leave Matt’s decisions up to Matt.
I found a code for dreamhost that knocks the first year down to 9.24, 119 every year there after. It’s 2400 meg storeage, 120 gig bandwidth, unlimited sql, 600 hosted e-mail, shell all the stuff under the crazy insane domain option.
If you are really curious (I don’t want to spam too hard core:) )
send me an e-mail at [email protected]
I figure, at 10 bucks for the first year, everyone can afford to find out if they really want to mess with Web Dev or not.
Not to harp on this, but I agree with Shadow on DreamHost. Since I first mentioned here that my site had been down 9 times since signing up at the end of January, it’s gone down two more times and my mail three times. The customer service has been great, but in the end, I don’t want nice, I want up. They still refuse to move my database to a different server. *sigh*
