options groups, sections and fields- two questions.

    I am learning to create my own theme and option page and I have a two questions. hopefully they are not completely idiotic..

    1) I feel I missed the point of option groups. can I have a few option groups in a page? what are they used for and how should I divide my settings in these groups (obviously it depend on what I am trying to achieve but what is the guiding principles? for example what would be the value in using multiple groups over one group for all of my settings?) also, is it possible to move a setting to a different group without loosing its value?
    2) are fields and section required in order to display a setting or they are mainly for styling purposes and can be skipped if I choose to?
