My site – http://www.dearsportsfan.com – explains the basics of sports to people who want to learn. I have a bunch of courses like Soccer 101, Football 101, etc. that are made up of a set series of posts. I’d like to be able to number my posts and then have them show up in a sidebar so people can hop around within their section.
Does that make sense?

I think this plugin is not suited for what you want. Maybe try it with a plugin like these:
