Organizing posts on main page

I am running the theme “The Columnist” and am trying to figure out a way to have 4 set categories stay put as the 4 column bars across my main page. The goal is to be able to keep the category titles in the same places when I make a new post under a catergory it will pop into that spot and replace the previous post rather than just push it down the line. I hope someone can help me with this.
