outgoing email issues

i am running 2.0.5 wp on a shared economy server at godaddy. they did the initial install. i have not yet updated to 2.1. i am a designer, jim, not a programmer… i am super new to wordpress as well.

the blog is set up and working great except no emails go out. when someone subscribes they do not get an email. i have installed subscribe2 and the widget. when someone subscribes this way they do not get an email. after they are in the list they do not get an email when new posts are made.

i finally found some info about subscribe2 that indicated that wp-cron was needed so i installed that. still no email.

now i am wondering do i need to install wp-mail as well? does wp have email functionality “out of the box” or do i need to add that with a plug-in?

then i wondered if godaddy php was not connecting to the smtp properly. so i downloaded swift mail.

as you can see i have really been working hard here with out much luck.
