I’m looking at what seems like a bot surge on my site causing a spike in the visits reported by Matomo. A lot of the visits show the Page title as “Page Name not defined”; however on the segmented visit log I notice that all the pages visited have titles. The Transitions also show a large number of “reloads”. https://imgur.com/a/r4sId7Q

Is there any way to automatically / manually filter out such visits from the reports?

Hi @saowp when you look in the visitor log for these visits with page title “Page Name not defined” is there maybe a URL shown as well? It may be worth checking the page just in case there is really an issue with the page (which would explain the reloads).

We have generally overall a plugin that helps with preventing tracking spam but it can’t detect all the cases: https://plugins.matomo.org/TrackingSpamPrevention?wp=1&matomoversion=4 You could give it a try and activate the settings after installing it in “WP-Admin Dashboard -> Matomo Analytics -> Matomo Reporting -> Administration (cog icon top right) -> General Settings”. If they come from a bot there is a chance they would be filtered out automatically.

You could also look if any of these visits having anything in common like the same user agent or other things.

You can then define exclusion settings in Matomo in WP Admin Dashboard -> Matomo Analytics -> Settings -> Exclusions. For example you can exclude certain IPs, user agents, etc.

You can also delete visits by going to WP-Admin Dashboard -> Matomo Analytics -> Matomo Reporting -> Administration (cog icon top right) -> Privacy GDPR Tools. However, it only allows you to search and delete visits based on visitor data, not on a specific URL they viewed. For example you can find them based on their IP address etc but it’s a bit of work.

Thanks, @tsteur . I added the plugin you suggested, and will keep an eye for unusual traffic in future. This bot surge came from a variety of IPs and user agents to a number of different URLs on my site, all of which have page names.

These bots showing up in the traffic does not have any effect on the website performance or business goals for this site. I will try the different actions you have suggested – thank you so much for your support!
