    Hello
I am new to WordPress. All previous work on websites was in Dreamweaver, html, css.
This site I am attempting to work on belongs to a non-profit organization I volunteer for. It’s been years since the site was improved. It uses a custom theme.
What I need to do and I have no understanding how to do it is add (See image1) a panel – if panel is the correct term. Here is the website: meherbababooks.com
I attach three screen captures. (I see I cannot insert a photo here. I wrote notes on the capture. But on the main page there is no panel to the left as on About Us.
Some pages have the panel; some pages are without the panel. I need to put that panel on all the pages. I need help on this.

Image1: No Panel; Front Page http://www.meherbababooks.com/
Image2: With Panel; About Us http://www.meherbababooks.com/about-us

Let me know what I need to do to make the change.
    Thanks!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi Chuck – the “panel” that you’re referencing I believe is called a “sidebar” in WordPress and inside of the sidebars live Widgets. You can place menus or any type of content on a left or right sidebar. Some widgets even can be placed in the footer or header depending upon the theme.

Does your theme offer the ability to change the page template? If so – each page can probably be set to have a sidebar or be full width. You may need to check with your theme author directly on this or view the theme’s documentation found in the zip file or on their support forums.

That is very helpful. What I found in Theme / Customize / Widget or in Widget

In the Widget area there is no ‘Sidebar’ present. There is Primary Widget Area; Second Widget area. Then the first second third forth footer widget area. I have moved two widgets around into the various widget areas to see what happens and they populate the
footer areas as expected. “Main Category Widget’ is the one on About Us. That is what I am attempting to ‘widget’ into the Main Page on left sidebar. Currently on the main page left sidebar I have the Search Widget. Whatever widget I drag here and there at best I get is a widget on the main page left sidebar pushing down Search.

I feel close to getting it but I cannot get ‘Main Category’ to populate the left sidebar on pages without Main Category even though there are pages with Main Category’ as About Us.

Thus I feel at the moment at the disadvantage because there is no SideBar area in Widget territory to drag a widget into.

    Thanks for the help!
