    Message received:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘}’ in D:\Hosting\5393168\html\seamlesssailorblog\wp-content\themes\shaan\header.php on line 42

    Shaan theme

This error shows when attempting to access my site or when I try to post a blog post.

I am a novice blogger. The blog was set up for me. I don’t know how to go into code to make changes. I need very basic direction or someone to assist!

I’m assuming that this is a problem with the way my theme interacts with the new WP update? Is that correct? Could it be something else?

What are my options for fixing this?
-Can the previous version of WP be installed? Everything was working fine on prior version.
-Should I change to a more current theme?
-Very simple directions or someone who can make the correction to line 42 whatever that means?
-Could this relate to plug ins or a hack? I am getting some unusual requests for “users” with odd hotmail email addresses that I am deleting. (I have reset my password.)

    Appreciate your patience and assistance.

  • Yes, that’s a problem with your theme – which is quite outdated:

You should find a more current theme, yes.

You’ll need to use FTP access to your site to deactivate that theme – by renaming the theme’s folder to wp-content/themes/shaanHOLD. Are you familiar with using FTP?

Thank you. I did read it but didn’t fully understand it. I will read it again at your recommendation. Open to all suggestions!

WPyogi, thank you for confirming that the problem is centered around the old theme. I don’t know FTP. My husband set this up. He might. I was hoping to be a big girl and solve this myself…

Suggestions on choosing a theme that won’t be outdated? Do I need to use the main WP 2013 theme even if I really don’t like it? Safer for someone who is less tech savvy?

    Thanks.

    Where is your site hosted?

You can pretty much use any theme from here:

    http://ww.wp.xz.cn/themes/

Certainly don’t use one you don’t like :)!

The site is hosted by Go Daddy. Thanks.

Okay, so this should help you get FTP set up

    http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/96/uploading-files-to-your-website-ftp

Then find your theme’s folder and rename the folder for your current theme:

    wp-content
        themes
            shaanHOLD

That will force WP to use the default theme and let you login again.

Well you know the saying about keep it simple? I tried changing the theme (2013 so I have a very current one). It seems to be working. I’ll try taking the easy way for now.

I did learn a bit more through all this about FTP. So not a loss.

And that I won’t jump on updates!

    Thanks.

    Resolved for now.
