Interesting – thanks for reporting this. I was not aware of the issue and I have added an FAQ that links to the info you posted here: http://www.seriouslysimplepodcasting.com/documentation/why-does-the-feed-password-protection-feature-not-work/
Thanks!
If possible, I’ll try to work around this in the plugin itself, but that’s unlikely seeing as though it requires edits to .htaccess, but I’ll see what I can do.

You’re welcome 🙂
Despite what’s said on Stackoverflow, I didn’t have to override anything in the feed template: the line in .htaccess was enough to make everything work (though I had to make sure I put the line before the other WP Apache directives).
If you can’t find a way to put the fix in .htaccess, you could display a warning message in the Security tab when you detect that PHP is running under CGI.
It comes up in phpinfo so there must be a way to detect that at runtime.
OK – thanks for the update. I’ll tweak the FAQ entry now.
I’m sure it’s possible to detect at runtime and I agree – I warning note with a link to the FAQ will be a decent solution there.
Thanks!
I’ve followed these instructions for modifying the .htaccess file and SSP allows me to password protect the rss feed with a popup authentication window. Unfortunately the user name and password I enter are not accepted. I am certain that they have been typed identically in the Security dashboard and popup window.
Other details:
-I’m using Go Daddy as the host.
-I’m still getting the Fast CGI error in the dashboard after modification of .htaccess
-I’m able to successfully set individual passwords for podcast episodes, just not a functional password for the entire feed
Any ideas? Please help.
I spent a number of hours working on this issue tonight and the solution posted by Simbul worked for me. Thanks
PS The server is on Go Daddy.
