The payment notifcaiton comes to the plugin via IPN (not the return URL).
The return URL has absolutely nothing to do with the notification from PayPal.
So please don’t mix IPN with return URL because that will only lead to more confusion.
Make sure the IPN feature is enabled in your PayPal account so the plugin can receive notification after payment (by default it is enabled in the account but you may have changed it in the past). The following documentation has explanation on IPN:
https://simple-membership-plugin.com/enabling-paypal-ipn-feature-in-your-paypal-account/
The following documentation explains how to create the button so the IPN URL is in the button:

Hey,
I followed these exact steps before and users are not getting any registration email.
How can we fix that?
Hi try the following troubleshooting steps.
Regards
Hey, thank you for the link.
I enabled debug before, so I can send you the log.txt if it’s safe.
One of my users paid, he’s listed as a member with incomplete registration and he haven’t got an email (checked the spam folder) to finish the registration.
So I set up SMTP, checked it’s functionality (working), ran a test and the membership plugin didn’t send any email (which I saw in the log).
Coming back to my user I generated the registration completion link for him, but when I open it – it’s blank.
How can we fix that? Thanks.
Hi, did you follow @wp.insider instructions above?
You can either post your log file here as long as you don’t show any private or personal information or send me the log file by clicking on my name and getting in contact through my contact form.
Thank you
Hey, I just sent you the log file.
Thank you
Hi, I checked your log file and shows the following error message.
Failed to insert a new member record. This request will fail.not creating the user.
Something is wrong with your database accepting a new member’s record. Did you have this problem before?
Hey, thank you.
No, I haven’t had anything like this, but it appeared that my hosting account is being under attack, so I’ll make sure that every issue here is solved and will get back to you.
Thank you again and I’ll be in touch asap.
No problem, looking forward to your report.
Kind regards
Hey,
I had some problems with hackers, but now my hosting account is ok for sure, and I’m still having the issue.
I tried Today again, so you can check the bottom of the log file I sent you before via your contact form.
(“Error! Failed to insert a new member record. This request will fail.”)
After that you can see my cancellation, so sth is working, but obviously not everything.
Please let me know what you think and what can we do about it.
Thanks
Very strange your issue, try one more time to uninstall the plugin and install a fresh copy of the plugin again. I am asking you to do this because your site was previously hacked. Let me know how you go.
Regards
OK, but will I lose all my setting and data when I do that?
Regards
You don’t lose any stored data when you delete the plugin and re-install. All the important data is safe in the database.
