Hello– We’ve been using this free plugin for a while and for the last week have been experiencing an issue with PayPal payments not working. We have tried to resolve this a few times by removing the plugin, reinstalling it and connecting to PayPal.

After doing this we still can’t process payments and have also tried to ‘re-sync’ with PayPal only to see the following messages …
    1) PayPal webhooks refreshed successfully.
    2) Error – Something went wrong! : Unexpected response received – Failed to refresh PayPal user info.
    3) Error – Something went wrong! : Unexpected response received – Failed to refresh PayPal access token.

Advice on how to remedy this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

P.S. We have cleared the Liquid Web LLC APIs created each time we have tried to connect to PayPal so that there is only a single instance for the new connection.

    Hi @va-cape

I’m glad you reached out. Let me help you with this one.

We have a Knowledgebase article that provides guidelines on how to resolve the PayPal issue. Please kindly refer to the following link:

🔗 Configuring PayPal for Ticket Purchases – How to Resolve “Failed to Refresh PayPal Webhooks”

Kindly go through the steps outlined there and let us know how it goes.

If that doesn’t help, could you provide the version of the following? This will help me understand how your system is set up.

    • PHP
    • WordPress
    • The Events Calendar and/or The Events Calendar PRO
    • Event Tickets and/or Event Tickets PLUS
    • Theme

Hi Darian, thanks for responding so quickly and for the KB walk-through!

    • WordPress Version 6.8.1
    • PHP version 8.2.18
    • Theme is DIVI but the relevant ticketing pages (1) Order Complete and (2) Tickets Checkout are NOT using DIVI Builder.
    • Both free plugins installed: (1) The Events Calendar and (2) Event Tickets.

    Troubleshooting Steps:

    1. Deactivated WordFence Security – made no difference for re-sync or ticket purchase.
    2. Tried to purchase ticket on different browser – Got “Checkout Unavailable! Checkout is not available at this time because a payment method has not been set up for this event. Please notify the site administrator.” Message.
    3. Installed HTTP requests plugin – after re-sync attempt showed 2 401 status errors….

    (1) Request 0.217s: [3] https://api.paypal.com/v1/identity/generate-token
    (1) Response
      “headers”: [],
“body”: “{\”name\”:\”AUTHENTICATION_FAILURE\”,\”message\”:\”Authentication failed due to invalid authentication credentials or a missing Authorization header.\”,\”links\”:[{\”href\”:\”https://developer.paypal.com/docs/api/overview/#error\”,\”rel\”:\”information_link\”}]}”,
      “response”: {
        “code”: 401,
        “message”: “Unauthorized”

    (2) Request 0.187s: [2] https://api.paypal.com/v1/oauth2/token
    (2) Response
      “headers”: [],
      “body”: “{\”error\”:\”invalid_client\”,\”error_description\”:\”Client Authentication failed\”}”,
      “response”: {
        “code”: 401,
        “message”: “Unauthorized”

    Next steps?

    Hi @va-cape ,

Thank you for your message and the information.

It looks like the initial connection between your site and PayPal failed, which I suspect was due to some conflicts. Could you try disconnecting PayPal, deactivate third-party plugins and switch to a default WordPress theme (preferably the twenty-twenty-one theme), clear your database transients (see How to Manage and Delete Transients in WordPress), and then re-connect to PayPal in that state?

I experienced the same issue, and after hours of troubleshooting, I disconnected Paypal, rolled back the plugins to the following versions, reconnected Paypal and everything started working again:

    Event Tickets – Version 5.18.1.1

Event Tickets Plus – Version 6.1.4

The Events Calendar – Version 6.9.1

The Events Calendar Pro – Version 7.3.2
