    Hi Chris,

We didn’t make any changes to the payment processing. Did you make any changes to the payment settings in the plugin? Were there any changes made in your PayPal account? And do you have a PayPal business account? I ask because PayPal does indeed require at least a business account for accepting recurring payments/subscriptions. So, if you had it set to “once” for a single payment for membership, it would work with just a personal account, but, if you change the frequency of the payments to more than once, it would require a subscription, for which PayPal requires at least the business account.

Also, looking into this, I’ve found that there are instances where this error message pops up even for people who do indeed have business accounts. See the following support thread, for example: https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/Sandbox-Environment/Sandbox-Testing-Problem/td-p/1301500?profile.language=en.

I just wanted to follow up on this for anyone else with this random issue.

after going several rounds with Paypal to diagnose this problem, it turns out it was indeed the plugin. plugin internally changed to a test url (sandobox.paypal). so I had to hunt the phps until I found the line and made sure the test url was changed to the standard paypal url.

etoiles email to me (a fast response as always):
“There’s actually a check in a different file to see if you’re using the sandbox and, if so, to automatically change the URL to the sandbox version. My guess is that, for some reason, instead of pulling the variable from the check, it’s just outputting the sandbox URL by default. I can’t say, at the moment, why that is. We’ll take a look and make sure to update the code there so that it displays the non-sandbox URL when required.”
