Per User Defaults?

I may have missed a post on this or something in the docs, but is there a way for custom fields to have defaults specified per user? For example, I have a custom field of type ‘select’ for choosing copyright (similar to Flickr). I’d like users to be able to set a default, so if they always want CC-BY-NC, they don’t need to change it every time they post. Currently it seems defaults are global.
