• Hi. I’m a newbie.

For you hardened members – i’ve looked through the posted and googled etc to solve this issue of mine.

So now I come with my tail between my legs for some help.

    Be gentle.

Okay – so I want to have my permalink as a /%postname%/ at the least or a /%category%/%postname%/ at the most. (for seo of course)

    I’m running 2.3.2.

It works fine on the default settings.

When I try the above – it gives me a 404 error – page not found.

I’ve read about fixing the .htaccess – but I’m not sure how to do it. Do I do it in wordpress admin section of my site – or do I use my FTP program to find it on my site and alter the file there?

    That I’m not sure.

So if we have some super helpful, systematic support person out there (bless you in advance) then I’d appreciate a newbie ‘dumby’ step by step approach.

    That would be great

    Yes – for finding.
No – for editing. You edit any file in a plain text editor, like Notepad. Although if you set its permissions to 666, WP will write it for you.

Before everything, make sure your host has all the requirements enabled for nice permalinks.
