    Hello all,

I am very new to this so forgive me for sounding like an amateur. I have been working on my first site and ran into a permalink issue where I am getting the 404 error for three out of four posts. I changed the permalink structure to /%postname%/ and proceeded to work on my pages and all of the sudden those three pages are not working properly.

I went in and changed the permalink back to the default setting, saved my changes, and then changed it back to the permalink structure I want to use hoping that would fix the issue and no luck.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem for me? I am at a loss for what to do and work has come to a screeching halt! Help!

    Thank you!

  • Does everything work if you set it to one of the non-custom permalink settings?

If you mean setting it to default…yes..

I meant any of the settings other than “Custom Structure”. I would say that you’re having problems with 404’s because you only used /%postname%/; I’ve seen in the past where that would cause conflicts that resulted in 404’s. Like it says here, it’s recommended that you put some numeric bit (such as /%year%/) before that.

    Edit:
This link is also a good resource on the subject.

Oh I see what you mean, I think.

I’m using a course to learn how to do all of this and was told to place /%postname%/ into the custom structure. (which obviously did not work well)

I just tried the other common settings available, day and name, month and name, numeric, and those all work fine. Should I just go with one of those?

Once again, forgive me. I’m very new to this! 🙂

If you like any of those, sure! You can use whichever you like the best including a custom structure. Just make sure, if you do use a custom structure, that you try to follow the recommendations in the first link I gave (which should prevent this problem from occurring again).
