Permalink Structure changed without my knowing
-
I noticed that my site isn’t being cached. Don’t know when this happened. It was being cached by Google but now it isn’t. So I checked my crawl errors on Webmaster Tools. I found that I had the following errors:
HTTP (1)
In Sitemaps (38)
Not Followed (9,206)
Not Found (2,277)
Unreachable (5)I don’t check Webmaster Tools very often. I see that is a mistake that I will change in the future. Up till now, I was checking Webmaster Tools once every few months. I think I was actually avoiding it because the experience is very frustrating. The reason I avoid it is because I see the diagnosis but don’t know what to do to fix the problem.
In this case, Webmaster tools provides me with three different downloads. I don’t have a clue what to do with the downloads so this is useless for me.
What I know is I set up a custom structure for my permalinks in my WordPress website. The structure I’ve been using for at least a year is
http://www.laprogressive.com/category/postname
I’m using the custom structure in the permalinks panel. Of course, the actual url doesn’t say “category” or “Postname”. It’ll show the name of the category and the actual post name in the url.
But when I look at the thousands of urls listed that Google encountered an issue with when crawling my site, the urls are not structured the way I structured them. They have a structure I am unfamiliar with. It looks like this:
http://www.laprogressive.com/ar/category/actual name of the category/post name
I don’t know how this happened. I don’t know the ramifications of having so many crawl errors or not being cached but this can’t be good and I don’t have a clue what to do about it.
