Permalink title oddity

    I managed to get my .htaccess file set up properly and the permalinks are now working. There is something strange though, and this happens when I use either the prefixed index.php non-.htaccess solution or when I use the regular .htaccess solution for showing permalinks. WP version 1.5.3

    I’ve used the structure as was recommended on the admin page:
    /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

    The weird thing is, some of the links show postname as it should, i.e. this-is-the-title but then some of the links show the postname as a number, which I assume is the post id. It seems to happen regardless of the length of the title or whether there are any non-letters in them. Willy-nilly is the word…

    Although this link still work, I’d rather see a proper title name. Has anyone run into this problem before (I looked but couldn’t find anything specific) or does anyone know why it’s happening?

    Is it possible when you were writing these posts you saved them to draft at one point, but hadn’t given them a title? I’m not sure when this changed, but older versions of WordPress assigned post ID to the “post slug” in such cases–since it needs something. In the current version it leaves it blank until the post is published.

    So just delete the post slug and hit “Save”. WP should then should give it the current title of your post (assuming you now wixh to change it).

    You’re absolutely right Kafkaesqui. I looked in the post slug field and there were indeed numbers in it like you said. I didn’t realise that the post slug is used for the permalink postname, especially since it’s added automatically. I always figured the postname was created on the fly using the post title, but never stored anywhere.

    I went in an deleted the numbers and saved them empty. This generates a post slug based on the title. If any WordPress codex dudes/dudettes read this it might be worth mentioning the use of the post slug for Permalinks on the Using Permalinks page?
