Permission for an uploads folder outside WordPress

For some peculiar security reasons, I had to set to upload files to a different folder from the regular “uploads” folder. Right now I’ve set its permission to 770, but WP is not liking it. What should be the permission on that folder so that I won’t compromise the server security?
