    I’m now at the latest WordFence 6.3.20
    Hosted on Godaddy Linux, PHP 5.6, WordPress 4.8.2

    [13-Oct-2017 16:03:10 UTC] PHP Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required ‘/home/############/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/waf/../vendor/wordfence/wf-waf/src/init.php’ (include_path=’.:/opt/alt/php56/usr/share/pear:/opt/alt/php56/usr/share/php’) in /home/############/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/waf/bootstrap.php on line 13

    This appeared today in the site’s error_log.

    Because I had just updated WordFence using the WordPress bulk updater, I suspected the error was related to the update. I deleted the WordFence plugin in FTP and installing the latest version directly. The error message did not occur again in the error_log, increasing my suspicion that it was related to the update.

    Could it be that the bootstrap script is allowed to run before the updated plugin files have finished uploading?

    This is not a new problem and has been previously reported, e.g. https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/free-wordfence-plugin-has-killed-my-web-site/. That topic was marked as “resolved” but only because the original poster didn’t come back. She was presumably able to solve her problem of how to uninstall WordFence after the plugin’s error message brought down her site, but the underlying problem in the plugin apparently hasn’t been resolved.

    Thanks for your attention,
    Paul

  • Hi @juniperpaul,

    The issue isn’t related to the file order, rather it happens because some files are missing in the plugin installation.

    It’s important to note that this problem occurs with other plugins too –of course, in those cases the error message points to different files.

    We were able to track down one reason this problem happens and we fixed it. However, there seems to be other circumstances under which it occurs and we’re still investigating.

    The action you took (reinstall from scratch) was the correct one.

    If it happens again (and also for other users encountering this problem) could you please zip the old Wordfence plugin folder before attempting to reinstall it and send that zip to us so we can add the information to our debug data on this case.

    Thank you.
