    Hello there,

My site is running on an outdated version of PHP (7.4.33), which does not receive security updates. When I updated to PHP 8.3 my site went offline straight away (blank screen). More below:

The problem:  Changing from *PHP 7.4 to PHP 8.3 results in a critical error on my WordPress Website [ redundant link deleted ].  After upgrading to PHP 8.3 my site went offline (blank screen).  I’ve switched back to PHP 7.4 and my site works fine with PHP 7.4 so far.

The Cause:  I’ve learnt from our web hosting service company that the theme (Passage) is causing the issue because some themes and plugins are not yet supported by PHP 8.3.

Problems with changing the theme (passage):  Changing the theme (Passage) can significantly change how my website looks and functions. It might cause problems with layout of the page and post content, widgets, sliders etc.. and at the moment I’m not ready to change the theme (Passage).

Questions: How can I check what part of the theme is causing the issue and how to fix it?  I’m currently running WordPress 6.8.2 and PHP 7.4.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hey @abla2025,

If your hosting provider pointed the issue was originating from the theme. Your hosting provider is the one to provide you with specifics of the error, ie, the file it is occurring in.

While volunteers of this forum would love to help. Support for commercial themes and plugins is outside the scope of these forums, and we cannot guarantee any support, whether from volunteers or developers.

I recommend trying to reach out to the theme developer directly or using their contact page.

    Cheers,
    Erick

Support of all commercial themes and plugins is out of scope for these forums. While we will not close your post, we also cannot guarantee any support at all, be that by volunteers or the developers. We recommend you instead use the developer’s official contact for their premium offerings, as that is the most direct line.

From the looks of the homepage on Themeforest, the Passage theme is no longer supported with updates (last responses 3 years ago). Your choices are (i) to stay on the outdated version of PHP and risk the associated security vulnerabilities, (ii) fix the theme’s compatibility issues with PHP 8.3, (iii) find someone (e.g. https://jobs.wordpress.net/) to fix these issues, or (iv) upgrade the theme to one which is regularly maintained (e.g. Kadence, Blocky, Twenty^). A few years ago I chose option iv and rebuilt five sites using a block-based theme. It was well worth the effort as the sites are more performant, have no compatibility issues with updates (PHP and WordPress core), and are future-proofed.

    Good luck!
