Over time, SiteGround has added a multitude of caching features and cache clearing-buttons to its plugin, yet it’s not quite clear what each button does.

Asking because, at first, we were told the Purge SG Cache button clears all cache (Dynamic, Static, File-Based, Memcached, and Cloudflare), but have learned that’s not the case. To clear Dynamic Cache, for example, we have to clear it in Site Tools. SG Optimizer does not appear to achieve that.

So, in short, can you tell us what type of cache does each SGO button clear? Specifically:

    (1) Automatic Purge: What type of cache does it automatically clear?
    (2) Manual Cache Purge (Purge Cache button): What type of cache does it clear?
    (3) Purge SG Cache button: What type of cache does it clear?

Last, is their any way you guys can simplify your cache layers and design one button that takes care of all of them? It’s getting a bit tricky.

Also, offering us the ability to clear cache on a per-page basis would be nice (without using a filter, something similar to what Cloudflare offers).

    Thank you!

    Hey @generosus,

Indeed the three buttons have different cleaning logic. As per your request, I have structured the information below.

    Automatic Purge
When this feature is enabled, our plugin monitors specific WordPress hooks and purges the entire cache or performs a partial purge. Once such a hook is triggered, the plugin flushes the cache of:
    – Dynamic Cache
    – File-Based cache
    – CloudFlare cache(for SiteGround users only)

Manual Cache Purge (Purge Cache button):
    – Dynamic cache

    Purge SG Cache button
    – Dynamic cache
    – Memcached
    – File-Based cache
    – Clears assets(minified combined CSS, JSS, etc)
    – CloudFlare cache(for SiteGround users only)

If a specific cache is not flushed as expected, please post a new ticket from your SiteGround User Area and provide us with more information about how we can replicate the issue.

    Hi Dimitar,

Excellent answer. Very helpful. Much appreciated.

Before closing this topic, however, I have three final questions:

    (1) If we modify a website page or add/delete a post, what cache-clearing sequence (or procedure) do you recommend to ensure we don’t reset the cache for our entire website? Asking because when we clear our cache via SGO’s Purge SG Cache button, we have to wait 24-72 hours before Cloudflare’s cache is fully propagated. We want to avoid that since our entire website slows down considerably every time we clear our cache.

    (2) Is their any way SiteGround can incorporate another function (yes, another button) into SGO’s Caching dashboard that will allow us to clear cache on a per-page or per-post basis? This would be a VERY USEFUL button and take care of (1). Similar to Cloudflare’s Custom Purge feature (Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2).

    (3) To minimize or eliminate questions from other customers about this same topic, can you guys pin this post, update your Plugin Description, and update your Plugin Tutorial to incorporate this information? It would be awesome!

    Again, thank you.

Thank you for the update, we appreciate your feedback.

If you would like the cache to be partially flushed, you should enable the Automatic Purge feature. However, this will purge CloudFlare’s cache, too. Regarding the new feature request, we will consider this, but we cannot promise or provide an ETA.

    Best Regards,
