• Hi all,

My dear Dad passed away in February this year and was an avid user or wordpress(He had his personal dmain attached to it), he blogged everyday for two years about his cancer treatment (He had a great sense of humour and great stories-He was a nuclear engineer and also a director of a 80’s gaming company-He love his computer games and regularly helped gamers out on forums).
He passed away suddenly of septicaemia and his domain payment lapsed as it was connected to his bank which was in turn closed so we lost the domain.
I have however access to his hosting site which he hosted the domain, 1&1. Here I have access to his PHP and SQL database for the wordpress.

Is there anyway I can retrieve his posts from the PHP / SQL? I would love his grandson (Who is still in the belly!) to one day read his post and feel he knew his Granddad a little bit.
I have also tried to look for any back ups on his pc but not sure what the file extension would be etc?

    Thank you in advanced,
    Meals

  • Sorry for your loss.

Thankfully you have everything you need to recover your father’s work. Firstly I’d make sure to download a backup immediately, in case the hosting is under a similar arrangement.

The simplest way to get the content in a readable form is to get that WordPress install running. The quickest way to do this would be to purchase the expired domain, and follow the host’s instructions for pointing it to the website.

If you need to move it somewhere else, or take it local, the Moving WordPress article is a good place to start: https://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Moving_WordPress

    Hi Jacob,
Thank you for responding to my post, I have just made a back up using MyPhp admin, as you are very right the hosting company could pull the plug any moment and I would of lost all chances of recovery.
My heart jumped when I saw the listed posts on MyPhp Admin:-). I’ve export as a SQL file on my pc and will make a back up onto external harddrive.

I am just trying to export them as post contents into word so I can read them again, blogging is so powerful. Its such a time capsule of life.

Thank you again *I am jumping for joy 🙂
