Actually, it looks like this is my own error message. I commented out the original error message in the plugin code. The original message is “Sorry the email address you entered was previously submitted”

but no matter what email address I use I am getting this message, so the bottom line is, mailchimp is sending back an error mo matter what email is entered.
Any ideas on what this could be?
    thank you.

Hi there. Did you try turning on “Advanced Error Messaging?” It’ll give you more detailed info on the exact error MailChimp is returning.

That setting is on the “MailChmp Settings” page. Here is a screen shot:

Thanks. It looks like I am using an older version of the plugin so I don’t have that option.
I will upgrade and see if that helps.

ok, this is ugly. I updated the plugin and this is what I get with extended error reporting. My form only includes an email address, no first and last name. Is this a new requirement from mailchimp or is there a way to specify only an email address?

If this is indeed failing because I am not sending in a name, is there a way to send dummy first and last names in the plugin code? I know this seems kind of dumb to do this, but it would at least get it working again until I can get my designer to redesign the form.
    thank you!

Since the new version of the plugin totally broke my site with all those error messages I reverted back to the old version of the plugin. If you could confirm that it’s the missing first and last names from the form that’s causing the problem (based on the php error messages above), then I can redo the form with those fields and then upgrade the plug in again.
    thank you very much.

Hi I did a little Googling on this error message. Can you please check this list on your MailChimp account and see if for some reason the field First Name is checked as required? I know that would be unlikely, but that seems to be a reason MailChimp would throw that error message.

Another troubleshooting step would be to add the first name field to your form and see if it works after that.

Did all of those error messages show up in general or just after you enabled advances error messaging?

    (@annethemes)

The error messages were showing up whenever I hit the submit button to send the email address to mailchimp/submit the form. Even when I disabled advance error reporting they showed up when I submitted the form. I tried suppressing them in the htaccess file but for some reason that didn’t work. Since this is a live site I just reverted to the old plugin since it was so broken.
It does appear that the first and last name are required by this list in mailchimp, so I turned off those requirements and now the old version of the plugin works again. Yay!

So my client must have gone in to Mailchimp and turned these fields on as required after this site was launched, or Mailchimp changed it’s error reporting to make it stricter. Not sure but it’s working now.

Thanks SO MUCH for your help!

Yay! So glad you found the issue.

We will look into the simple vs. detailed error messaging on the newest version of the plugin.
