A lot of people say good things about A Small Orange.
Dont use 1&1, I just don’t like their hosting setup and admin panel. I was happiest when with MediaTemple.com.
Go with Hostgator or Hostmonster, there service is reasonable. Or if you looking for dedicated box go to managemybox.com

I have no affiliation but I and my clients swear by A Small Orange.
The SSH alone is a very big deal for WP users.But they are really cool all round.
mediatemple is “decent”, but overpriced and overhyped. They dont offer anything more than any other equally “decent” host, and the fact that they use their own admin panel puts them in the same category as godaddy, as far as I am concerned.
And thats coming from someone that actually has a testing blog installed on godaddy.
It would be a dealbreaker for me if my primary host didnt use a well-known standard administration area application, if I were new and looking for hosting. Far too many people cannot find their ways around cpanal and plesk, but atleast there are enough places to go where they can get help since other ppl and hosts are using those apps.
I am also put off by the fact that (mt)’s own blog, is running an obsolete exploitable version of WordPress. If they cannot take the time to … need I go on?
