I want to be able to have our recent posts in separate boxes, with each box dedicated to s single category. Will this plugin accomplish that? I am using the Platform 1.4.2 theme. Thanks.

Yes you can, and you can include other terms within the taxonomy depending on what page is currently being viewed.
