Hi,
I came here because I was having the same issue, and saw this thread.
But having experimented further, I found that if I put a widget in the ‘widgets for shortcodes’ sidebar (appearance/widgets), the customizer then shows up fine. It only breaks the customizer when the ‘widgets for shortcodes’ sidebar is empty.

Thanks for helping out guys! I’m pretty sure this came up before and there wasn’t a way for the plugin to avoid this issue.

Found the old post. Happens when it’s a sidebar not created by the theme and it’s empty.
