But it crashed WP after I tried to save my settings. I did this on a fresh WP install with no other plugins.

what specifically do you mean by “crashed”? Blank white page and/or cannot access wp-admin? Some basic requirements http://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/#system-and-server-requirements
