After trying to install the plugin I get the following error:

“The plugin cannot be activated because it generates a fatal error.”

What can be the reason?

This is not the error code, there should be more.
Did you try deactivating all other plugins except woocommerce and then activating side cart?
If this is regarding pro version, then make sure the free version is deactivated.
