Plugin direct upload – great feature but why .zip format?

I love the new direct plugin upload tool, and it works well when you search the plugin directory, but the whole thing falls apart if you’ve downloaded a plugin and want to upload it from your machine. (I’m on Mac Leopard and Safari 4.0.3). Plugins are automatically unpacked when downloaded, but the uploader will only accept .zip files. This means I need to re-zip the plugin before uploading it or nix the whole thing and go use Fetch or another FTP app, which relegates the direct uploader from WP useless. Seems like a long way around the problem.
