The short answer is that these login options can’t be modified currently, but there’s a reason why.
Having the Disqus login is important because you’re tapping into tens of millions of already registered users, who are provided with a consistent user experience across sites. This actually encourages commenting from those users, especially for the many who swear by using Disqus. Our insistence on having this login option is what will drive comments and traffic to your site, especially with some of the features we have planned in the next few months.
We will be reconsidering our social login options (we agree it’s a little messy), so stay tuned for that as well. We appreciate your understanding and let us know if you have any concerns.

Ryan, Any progress on the issue of allowing the site-owner choose which login options to allow, and more importantly, which login option to display by default?

Pasting my reply from the GitHub issue ticket:
“All login options are required and cannot be re-ordered. That said, thanks for the feedback; we realize some of the login flows (and options themselves) are outdated and will be addressing that in the next iteration of Disqus. More on that here: http://blog.disqus.com/post/19693554817/disqus-labs”

I know all options are required and can’t be reordered. Hence the feature request 🙂
The link you posted is interesting but at first glance it doesn’t speak to the matter at hand.
Let me elaborate: this would be a feature request for our product as a whole, not for the plugin, which is why I closed the issues ticket. If you ever have any additional product feedback shoot it our way at http://disqus.com/support
The link posted explains more about our new labs program and the main part of that program: testing Disqus 2012, the next iteration of our embed. There’s a link in that blog post which points to http://labs.disqus.com/signup/ which is where you can sign up to be a part of Disqus Labs, and hence to text Disqus 2012. That would allow you to see the new sign-up and login flows we’re currently envisioning, which is how it speaks to the matter at hand.

I see. Thanks. I signed up for it. Not sure if my Disqus 2012 has been activated.
I guess I’ll need to be activated to be able to see what’s in store as there’s not a lot of specific info on the blog.
