[Plugin: Maintenance Mode] all content disappears when I deactivate plugin

I am kinda new to wordpress so maybe I did it wrong. but I installed this plugin to keep the site in maintenance mode while I build the site. The site is now done but when I deactivated the plugin every page is blank and all my customizations are gone. Like it reverts to the way the site looks right after install. I do have a theme installed.

If I reactivate the plugin everything is there and I can see all the content. so it’s not like the content is being deleted. but without the site in maintenance mode all the custom content simply does not show.

I even tried to delete the plugin but to no avail. I reinstalled the plugin and everything is there. But obviously cannot get it out of maintenance mode.

Please help, this really sucks.
