same problem here with Thumbnails – cannot see them… I am using the latest version of NextGEN Gallery and the latest version of Atahualpa theme, as well as latest version of WordPress… can someone help, please?
I ran into this issue and it was actually multi-fold.
Issue 1) Shared host script timeout was 30 seconds, NextGen scripts may take longer than this when working with large or many images (it’s a ‘the server is busy thing’) and well, NextGen does not realize this and some things like thumbnail creation are not performed or maybe the exif data was not extracted…try to fix this by deleting the gallery at issue and only doing one pic or a few at a time. When editing, save after each change, making many edits then saving can also cause this…save small bits…
Issue 2) File size. Try to optimize the images for web. Also review the settings in NextGen options for thumbnails.
Issue 3) Browser..try a different browser. Also, refresh that page after you have made any site changes (not in admin mode, but when you are looking at your site and not logged in).
Tip: Note: This applies to the NextGen functions that use the static thumbs only, some functions create them on the fly)
The thumbnails can be created by NextGen, but they do not have to be…they are the same name as the original images with a thumb_ appended and re-sized smaller…if you continue to have issues these thumbs can be manually created and then overwritten to the thumb folder for the gallery using ftp. Once you have a gallery with images in it, use your ftp client to review the folders for that gallery. Download the gallery folder images, copy and re-size, rename accordingly, upload ‘thumbs’ to the thumbs folder within the gallery folder (overwrite)…as you used the original images, the thumbs should also include the exif info like caption, title and description (which you used a photo application to include prior to actually uploading the original files as then those fields are auto-filled in in NextGen, yes?) If this is ALL done correctly, all will be well when you add the shortcode.
I am not sure if we are talking about the same problem.
Creating the thumbnails or recreating them works perfectly. I can see the thumbnails in the gallery and on the page in the website.
The editing of an individual thumbnail in the gallery is the problem.
There is ar as far as I know no server side issue, no memory issues. The file size is not big, 300 Kb max, usual 50-100 Kb.
We are talking about the same problem. Please review and attempt each of my suggestions.

I am not working with “large or many images”. It is just 1 and small image. I cannot see why it should be in this case a time out issue.
Issue 2) File size.
The file sizes are small, usual 50-100 K max
Issue 3) Browser..try a different browser.
Same problem in Firefox, Chrome, Safari and IE.
Refreshing logged in or out makes no difference

Did you try to manually create the thumbs and/or replace the gallery? Also, can you provide a link to the site/gallery please?

Some of the Title Attributes have special characters, ie:

Try removing the images with special characters in the Title or Description from the Gallery, add back in, and either don’t use special characters or encode them properly.
You may also consider wrapping the a href in bold as opposed to just the title.
Check this for all images in the galleries.

Tested your suggestion:
I made a new gallery, uploaded just 1 (small) image, no title, no description, to be sure that there are no special characters .
Same problem, when editing the full size image on the left is not loading, and the cropping tool did not present itself.
So, it is not problem with Title/Description special characters
It is very strange, with the rotate uption no problem, the full size image on the left is normally loading.
Only the editing thumbnailgives a problem.
Try seeing if the images that you are uploading contain title, caption, or description text that contains special characters – on import these are loaded into the database verbatim, and there have been know issues with this…
I am writing this as I ran into the exact same issue, I received some images to post from a family member and they had ! and & and even $ in the file names and titles and descriptions. I had the same result as you, same issue with editing some thumbnails (and found it was the ones with special characters).
I went through each, renamed them 1 though some # .jpg, and removed the title and description exif data and recreated the gallery.
Once I did that the issue went away.
Yes, I had to manually enter the title, desc. in the gallery manage area, but it fixed the problem.
Here is the FAQ for a plugin that works with NextGen. I found the last paragraph very interesting as it notes what I am saying above, re special characters.
Upgraded to 1.8.4 and editing problem is gone!
Everything works like a charm now!
