Good news. While the dev is still ghosting us, I managed to find a workaround. Just download version 9.2.12 from the bottom of this page here (https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/auto-post-thumbnail/advanced/) and then just upload it manually to your WP admin section (via /wp-admin/plugin-install.php), as you do with other plugins. It will then automatically replace your existing version and work again – the version thereafter is what broke it all.
Also, make sure to then disable automated updates for this plugin version.
More good news. Found an amazing plugin that does the same and does so even better, faster and, above all, more reliably.
