Steve appreciate you keeping the plug in updated but my own personal opinion is that even WordPress assures a certain amount of backward compatibility. Wish you would have considered the same. Just saying I had to deactivate via FTP every instance across 40 websites. That being said, i like your plug in and did give it 5 stars after initially installing a while back. I’ll have to wait for my host to update PHP and mySQL before reactivating.
I can confirm, that the stated solution works – just upgraded PHP to 5.6 and everthing is OK again.
@a3rev, just to avoid confusion, I would suggest you to change the Installation Minimum Requirements also (it’s still stated “PHP 5.5.0” there).

Apologize for the inconvenience of that, but with you hosting 40 sites it will be a good thing to upgrade the PHP on the server. We do our best to keep it backward compatible – but believe that 18 months since PHP 5.5 had become unsupported with known vulnerabilities was reasonable – especially with PHP strongly recommending that 5.5 not be used because of that.
If you can get your host to upgrade to PHP 7.0 or higher (rather than 5.6 +) you should also see a noticeable increase in speed in your sites backends – that is what we found when we upgraded PHP to 7.0 in January last year.
Thank you for the 5 star review that you gave the plugin – we use it on all of our website clients sites – it is awesome for helping optimize page speed load times. We are planning on adding some more useful features to it this year.

Thanks for the heads up about that – will update it as soon as we get a chance.

I ugraded my php from 5.2 to 7.1 and when activating again the pluggin it crushed the site again (5oo).

FIY I already solved it. Apparently my theme needed an update because it was not compatible with php 7.1. I moved the server config from 7.1 to 5.6 and everything works correctly. No errors related to php from the pluggin nor the template.
